Abstract

Enrique del Moral: The mexican debate between tradition and modernity 1946-1963. This thesis arises from the interest in discovering the theoretical and practical background that led the architect Enrique del Moral to a search for balance on the debate between tradition and modernity emerged in the architecture of Mexico during the fifties. The peculiarities of a country immersed in a strong tradition are determinant for the proper interpretation of new ways of conceiving the architectural project. The arrival of modernity linked to the prevailing thought that sought an architecture that recognizes as their own, generated divergent positions that arise between tradition and modernity, while architects shift towards a consensus between these two precepts. As an example of this latter position, Del Moral is one of the most active figures in the debate at the time, producing a large number of written defining his theory. This thesis presents an analysis of the architecture of the Moral comparing it with its theoretical production in order to discover to what extent he achieved an assimilation or a reinterpretation of traditional elements used in the modern conception of his work. The structure of the thesis is composed of three main parts: the first part, presents the central character and a brief analys is of the role that it takes in the debate through the main sources of dissemination, through events and important figures in the discussion. A second part is focused on the analysis of the wrilings of the architect, and finally,a third part where the work and the relationship with the theory are studied. Through the analysis of wrilings and works, it seeks to discover whether the issues raised in his theory was applied in practica as well as reveal in which proportion he achieved a balance between tradition and modernity.
