Abstract

Josep Maria Sostres is one of the Catalan architects belonging to the New Modernity, the period within the Modern Movement in which it began to go into crisis due to its dogmatism and its lack of humanity. In Catalonia, as in other places of Spain and the rest of the world, a series of critical positions against the extremism of the International Style began to come to light, in favour of the reinterpretation of the popular, vernacular and typical architecture of each territory, of each region.

Sostres is the first in Catalonia to meet his European counterparts, which allows him to introduce this new way of understanding architecture into his field.

His production is more theoretical and critical than architectural, in the sense that it is communicated more through the publication of articles in magazines of a diverse nature. However, and despite this limited amount of architectural work, its quality will exceed any limit and will be the materialized reflection of his thought. In this sense, his evolution will go hand in hand with that of his writings, always heterodox and following a consistent dialectic in the awareness of living through a moment of crisis, but not knowing where to go. Proof of this is his argumentation, initially rationalist, and late after from a certain critical regionalist moment. However, and despite this evolution, its language will always be clear, concise, and decisive.
