With this text we try to value the figure of Fernando García Mercadal understood as "correspondent of modernity", since he was one of those responsible for the timid entry of the modern movement in our country in the era before the Civil War. It wasn't just the numerous trips he took. to complete your training. but its importance also lies in the many contacts he made with the most important architects of the moment, such as Le Corbusier, which made him participate in the first of the CIAM in addition to getting some of these "first swords" of modern architecture to visit our country to give lectures. In addition, he was, together with José Luis Sert, one of the promoters of GATEPAC (Group of Artists and Technicians for the Progress of Contemporary Architecture). Likewise, we will review his first period as an architect with the Rincón de Goya as a masterpiece and some of his first projects in that phase of epidermal modernity that he had no choice but to abandon every time the Civil War broke out and the taste for the modern varied towards a much more monumental and historicist vision. In short, we find an architect who was much more important for what he saw and wrote than for what he built, because thanks to him many students and architects were able to give an account of that architecture that happened outside our borders and that, to our country, came to droppers, an issue that Mercadal, along with other colleagues, They helped to alleviate to the extent of their possibilities
