CALL FOR PAPER: Second issue, THE MODERN MOVEMENT TODAY

2024-05-20

The modern movement is, without a doubt, the most relevant architectural trend of the last century. It introduced undeniable innovations, which meant a change in the way of understanding architecture. Its bold construction solutions, hygienist proposals and innovative compositional approaches established new ways of understanding architecture.

Many of these ideas not only characterized works and architects of the last century but also, in some way, endure in today's architecture. We have to look at the past from the present and explore what the modern movement has contributed to today's architecture and how its approaches have influenced it.

It is also essential to address the need to update these architectures and what should be the appropriate mechanisms for their heritage integration. Its materiality, its particularities, and its shortcomings differ from those of previous periods, so it is possible that specific tools should be considered for its correct adaptation and conservation.

On the other hand, the diffusion and enhancement of these architectures have increased in recent years and have given rise to new readings and interpretations. Its spaces are the setting for a number of film productions, videos, and series or advertising campaigns, and its presence on social media is becoming increasingly significant. To what extent all this contributes to the integration of heritage and the appreciation of these architectures should also be addressed.

The current view of the architecture of the modern movement that we propose in this new issue of Ram must be approached from different perspectives. We suggest the following:

  • How valid are the fundamental principles of the modern movement today?
  • How is the influence of the modern movement evident in the architecture of the last 50 years?
  • How can the architectures of the modern movement be adapted to current normative standards, which are much more demanding than those that saw the beginnings of these architectures?
  • What are the heritage values of these architectures from a current perspective?
  • What should be the legal and regulatory tools that guarantee an adequate conservation of modern movement architecture?
  • What intervention, reuse, or conservation actions in buildings of the modern movement have delved into these issues and should be highlighted?
  • What role do these architectures play in today's visual arts and how do they contribute to their dissemination?

With these premises,we launch the call for articles in issue 2 of the "Revista de ArquitecturasModernasDocomomo Ibérico (RAM)".
