INNOVA CONCRETE

INNOVA CONCRETE is an ambitious international research project led by the Universidad de Cádiz in which the Iberian DOCOMOMO Foundation is participating. The project is finnanced by the EU, in the EU call Horizon 2020 – Industrial Leadership – Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials, Advanced Manufacturing and Processing, and Biotechnology.

The objective of the programme is the conservation of concrete historical buildings and monuments. To fullfill the objectives, an international consortium of 29 partners from 11 countries has been created. It gathers an interdisciplinary team presenting a strong scientific background in simulation techniques and nanomaterials synthesis, combined with a wide knowledge of CH conservation from Humanities disciplines and, a sound industrial perspective..

Specifically, a completely innovative approach based on producing C-S-H gel, responsible for the engineering properties of cement paste in cracks of decayed concrete monument, in situ, will be developed. Complementary, other innovative solutions giving rise to superhydrophobicity and corrosion inhibition will be also investigated. In addition, InnovaConcrete will explore an approach based on biotechnology: enzyme-assisted self-healing of damaged surfaces. The optimization of the solutions proposed will be carried out by the use of theoretical tools (multi-scale modelling approaches) together with experimental tools (laboratory and in situ validation).

Fundación DOCOMOMO Ibérico, in collaboration with ICOMOS, the Instituto de Ciencias de la Construcción Eduardo Torroja, the University of Lodz and Techedge Group, have developed a online database that  compiles 100 sites that are representative of the importance of concrete in the 20th century. The aim is to transmit the value of fair-faced concrete sites to society, through a series of examples that highlight different aspects of concrete that are relevant to these sites’ significance as cultural heritage.
